Glutathione

Glutathione

Glutathione is a tripeptide molecule composed of glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. It is one of the most important antioxidants produced by the body and has a wide range of functions.

Here are some of the functions of glutathione:

1. Antioxidant: Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes harmful free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the body. It protects cells and tissues from oxidative damage caused by environmental toxins, radiation, and other factors.

2. Detoxification: Glutathione plays a crucial role in the detoxification of harmful substances, such as heavy metals, chemicals, and drugs. It binds to toxins and helps to eliminate them from the body.

3. Immune function: Glutathione is essential for proper immune function. It helps to activate immune cells, such as T cells and natural killer cells, which are important for fighting infections and cancer.

4. Protein synthesis: Glutathione is involved in protein synthesis, the process by which cells produce new proteins. It helps to regulate the folding and structure of proteins, which is essential for their proper function.

5. Energy production: Glutathione plays a role in the production of energy by helping to maintain the function of mitochondria, which are the powerhouses of the cells.

6. Aging: Glutathione levels decrease as we age, and this has been linked to various age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and cataracts.

Overall, glutathione is an essential molecule with numerous functions in the body, including antioxidant protection, detoxification, immune function, protein synthesis, energy production, and aging.

If one is so inclined one can supplement with.

1. NAC

2. Glycine

3. Glutamic Acid

I have supplemented with 1 and 2. However, I have not got around to read up on glutamic acid so I have not yet tried it out. However all of these three are in foods with bioavailable amino acids.

Certain foods have more of these.  I supplement with collagen, which contain all three especially glycine.

Glycine is interesting in itself in several ways. Glycine and health - pubmed search
